Tipping On Cruise Ships

By David Erskine

How do you figure out cruise ship tipping and what is the proper tipping on a cruise? Gratuities on a cruise can be confusing for first-time cruisers because of the different tipping guidelines from one cruise ship to the next. There are no really hard rules to follow when it comes to tipping. It would be wise to ask your cruise agent what the tipping scheme is for the cruise ship you are going on and think about the options that you could take.

Cruise ship tipping has 3 basic categories that are being followed:

Automatic Tipping - To spare you from the trouble of figuring out how much tip to give out, many cruise lines are adding tips instantly to the client's on-board accounts. Some of the major cruise lines like Carnival and Norweigan are adding $10-$13 per day, per guest charge for dining and stateroom services.

Most of the cruise lines will give out discounted tips for children. The total of the tips can be controlled when the account is close, based on the client's judgement. In some cases, travel agents can add gratuities directly into the cruise price.

Tip Recommendations - Some cruise lines will provide proper tipping on a cruise suggestions. Cruise lines will give you the option of either paying your tips in cash at the end or include them to your on-board account, which is then closed before you disembark.

No Tipping Policy - Most luxury cruise lines will declare that there is no need to give out tips to cruise employees. The tips are sometimes built into the price of upscale cruises. Sometimes it's really quite good if you'll give out a tip for employees who offer quality service.

Take time to plan out your tipping options because cruise lines can really drain a lot of your money if you're not aware of how things work. Going on a cruise is like walking inside a floating Las Vegas casino. Everything inside the ship is designed to make you spend lots of money. - 29868
