Reasons to Visit the Caribbean on a Cruise

By Sarah Van Rensburg

The Caribbean is the most popular destination on the planet for those looking to go on an ocean cruise aboard a luxury cruise liner for the very first time, and probably isn't in the category of cheap cruises! It is home to some of the largest cruise ships in the world, including Royal Caribbean's newest creation the Oasis of the Seas. Their dedication and investment in building Oasis, which holds over five thousand passengers and is 360 metres long, shows just how much demand there is for Caribbean cruises.

The largest passenger ship built before Oasis of the Seas was a trans-Atlantic liner called the Queen Mary II, which is still in service as the flagship of the Cunard Cruise line. The QM2 is 345 meters long and was designed to cross the ocean. The ships being made by Royal Caribbean are being used in the Caribbean only, a much smaller area but very much in demand with tourists from Europe and the United States.

So where are all of these cruises going? The most popular destinations in the Caribbean are Puerto Rico and Jamaica, but there are quite a few who travel to the lesser known islands of the Lower Antilles to experience more wide open space and less commercialism. If you're looking for a private week away with your spouse or partner you might want to look for something no one else is looking for.

The islands are not the only destinations in the Caribbean. The mainland in South America has ports-of-call that get their fair share of traffic from the cruise ships. Trips to the Lower Antilles often include stops in Venezuela and French Guyana in addition to the more common ports of Aruba and the Netherlands Antilles. Grenada and Trinidad and Tobago are also well travelled.

Central America also offers its share of beauty and tourist attractions. The port cities of Costa Rica and Panama are friendly and open to take in cruise ships and their passengers. Belize, El Salvador, Guatemala, Nicaragua, and Honduras also have their share of attractive features. The Caribbean touches all of these and they offer some nice mainland options for extended cruises.

The Caribbean is a tropical paradise like none other. It has replaced the Mediterranean as the destination of choice for vacation goers looking for something different. The best reason by far to come here is to enjoy white sandy beaches, warm friendly people, and natural scenery that will leave you speechless. When you come here you won't want to go home. - 29868
