Why Cruise The Amazon?

By Sarah Van Rensburg

Right near the top of the list of exciting but cheap cruises to take the family on are Amazon riverboat cruises. Don't misunderstand; Amazon cruises aren't cheap by many people's standards but compared to a trip on a luxury liner through the Caribbean or Mediterranean, you can get a lot more for what you spend by going to the Amazon. The region also offers sights and panoramic vistas not available anywhere else.

The rain forest of the Amazon contains the most diverse collection of plant and animal life in the world. It is believed that the cures to most of what physically ails mankind may be hidden under its leafy branches, guarded by legions of insects, felines, bipeds, and reptiles not willing to give up its secrets. Have no fear though. Amazon cruise operators are experienced in this climate and not likely to allow you or your loved ones to come to any harm.

Two don't-miss stops on any Amazon River tour are Bolivia's Madidi National Park and the Pantanal of Brazil, both phenomenal choices for wildlife viewing. See the beauty and timeless majesty of the rainforest up close and personal and contemplate the value of this precious resource to the rest of mankind. It has been around for millions of years and is now being destroyed acre by acre so enjoy it while you can.

While taking in the breathtaking natural scenery you might want to take a tour through the colorful city of Cuzco, view the ruins at Moche or Chimu, and travel along the Inca trail to Machu Picchu. The people who once populated this region pre-date most of the existing civilizations on earth and much about them is still a mystery. Walk the paths that they walked, visit their cities and temples, and maybe discover long lost treasures.

The best reason to go on an Amazon cruise is to see something that you cannot see anywhere else in the world. The rain forest is one of our most precious natural resources and in few short decades, at the rate it is being destroyed by man, it may not be there anymore. If you have any desire at all to see this land where time has stood still you'll want to go now. Take an Amazon cruise and find out why so many people are so passionate about the preservation of this region. - 29868
